Enjoy art, leaves during Color Weekend on mesa

“Sunset Through Trees” was created by Mary Moss, one of the artists who work will be exhibited in The Outsiders’ show at a cabin at 5216 Colorado Highway 65 on Color Sunday, Sept. 29.

If any group of people can appreciate the spectacular change of seasons on Grand Mesa it is artists, particularly plein air artists.

For the past 15 years, a group of five plein air artists affectionately called “The Outsiders” — plein air artists working outside — have offered an art show and sale in conjunction with the popular Color Sunday festivities.

This year’s sale will go from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, at artist Wilda Fortune’s cabin, 5216 Colorado Highway 65, about one-quarter mile above Powderhorn Mountain Resort’s entrance.

Exhibiting artists are Fortune, Mary Moss, Sheri Balke, Mary Ellen Andrews and Gailen Schmidt.

The paintings, drawings and watercolors aren’t necessarily related to fall color, but the setting and timing of Color Sunday are appropriate for a group of plein air artists to sell their work and the cabin is located just off the popular highway people take to look at the changing leaves, Andrews said.

The artwork on exhibit and sale range in size and is “well-priced,” Andrews said.

The sale is one in a number of activities offered along Highway 65 over Grand Mesa during the last weekend of September, and Sunday will be the last day the Grand Mesa Visitor Center will be open.

At Powderhorn, color weekend will start Saturday, Sept. 28, with a disc golf tournament at 9:30 a.m. Family activities, including lift rides, will start at 10 a.m. and music from local band Roundabout will begin at 1 p.m. on The Sunset Deck.

Lift rides cost $15 for adults and $8 for children 12 and younger.

On Sunday, Sept. 29, also known as Color Sunday, Powderhorn will open at 9:30 a.m. for the Race Club’s Thigunawat 10k. Lift rides and other family activities will begin again at 10 a.m.

The Williams Brothers Band will play at 1 p.m. on the Sunset Deck.
