Accomplished photographer gives talk

Artist Joann Brennan will be featured in a talk at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Art Center, 1803 N. Seventh St.

Brennan is an artist, educator and environmentalist whose work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. She has worked as professor of photography at the University of Colorado-Denver’s College of Arts & Media since 1998 and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2003 and Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship in 2010.

Her work examines the human impact on nature, particularly conflicts with wild animals.

Artist in residence plans workshops

Mesa County Libraries 970West Studio Artist in Residence Natalie Bensel has scheduled several workshops.

■ The Art of Movement will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, in the Central Library’s Mesa Community Room. Discover the origins of performance art and the conceptual ideologies of its founders.

■ The Wire Sculpture Workshop will be 6 p.m. Sept. 27, in the 970West Studio at Fifth Street and Ouray Avenue. Learn the techniques to create a wire sculpture. Supplies included. Class size is limited and preregistration is required at the events calendar at mesacountylibraries.org or call 243-4442.

■ A Celebration of Women — Portraiture and Beyond will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 19 in the 970West Studio. Celebrate the influential women of art and create a Polaroid portrait. Preregistration is required at the events calendar at mesacountylibraries.org or call 243-4442.

Local plein air artists juried into show


Local artists Rebecca Dierickx, Barbara Churchley and Nancy Lewis juried into the Plein Air Artists Colorado 20th annual National Juried Fine Art Exhibition and Sale that will be on display Sept. 1–30 at Mary Williams Fine Arts in Boulder.

Dierickx’s oil painting, “Misty Day on the Redlands,” Lewis’s oil painting, “Play on Light and Dark,” and two pastels by Churchley, “Moab Rocks” and “Western Cliffs,” were among the paintings chosen for the exhibit

An opening reception is planned for 5–8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at the gallery, 5311 Western Ave., Suite 112, in Boulder.

Camera 101 workshop scheduled


Super Rad Art Jam will offer a Camera 101 photography workshop from 3–7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at Western Colorado Botanical Gardens, 641 Struthers Ave.

Participants can learn how to get their cameras off of “auto” to have full control over their images. Jen Swedhin, a professional portrait photographer based in Denver, will teach the workshop.
