Fire bans imposed in Estes Valley, Boulder County

ESTES PARK — High winds and dry conditions have prompted fire officials in the Estes Park area and Boulder County to impose fire bans.

Monday’s bans come as about 150 firefighters battle the 4,400-acre Fern Lake Fire in Rocky Mountain National Park.

That fire has been burning for nearly two months, but strong winds spread it over the weekend. Several hundred people were evacuated. The fire is 20 percent contained. Fire officials said crews have managed to keep the flames within park boundaries.

A fire ban was imposed Monday in the Estes Valley Fire Protection District, which includes Estes Park and parts of Larimer County.

To the south, Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle also enacted a fire ban in unincorporated parts of the county.
