Full weekend of art openings featured in First Friday

The local art community has definitely roared this First Friday while welcoming March like a lion with art openings from Friday through Sunday, March 7–9.

The +1 North Gallery and Studios, 1150 N. 25th St., will have its grand opening event and art opening from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 8. The + 1 North is a gallery, classroom space and working artist studio and is the newest art space in a growing artists’ community in the Grand Valley Magazine Plaza. The exhibit features works by photographer and Colorado native B.E. Butler; oil paintings by Kelly Krusnoski; oil paintings and photos by Sarah Mah Withers; pottery, photos and monotypes by Piera Kllanxhja; acrylic paintings by Kathy Davis; photos by Dave Wadsworth; art quilts of the Raven Mavens videographer Ross Deardorff; lithographer and watercolorist Hayley Anna Nikkel; and multi-media artist Ricky Montoya, resident studio artist.

The opening event also will feature readings at 12:30 p.m. by poets Luis Lopez, Doug Cox, Kyle Harvey and David Hood. There will be music by guitarist Paul Jensen from 1–4 p.m.

■ Kurtzman-Lintott Gallery, 412 Main St., will have a First Friday Art reception from 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 7, as Ken Redding’s “Russia Tour: 1983” continues to hang in the Mini Gallery. (Artist Tony Ortega’s visit was canceled.) Call 245-7949 for information.

■ The Veterans Art Center, 307 S. 12th St., will have its March Madness exhibition opening at 7 p.m. Friday, March 7. Call 462-3126 or go to operationrevamp.org for information.

■ The Art Center, 1803 N. Seventh St., will have a First Friday art opening on Friday, March 7. The introductions will be at 6:30 p.m. and the reception will go from 7–9 p.m. The exhibits are the 22nd annual Rockies West National water media show on display through April 4; Thinking Through Abstraction, on display through March 18; Colorado Mesa University Faculty Exhibit, on display through April 11; Voyeur’s View, a sneak peek of selected auction works (US Bank Fine Art Auction on May 2), on display through March 17. ■ +1 Gallery,in the Alpine Bank Building, 225 N. Fifth St., Suite 215, will host its First Friday reception and show from 6–9 p.m. Friday, March 7. A fashion show featuring crafts by Weekly Fiber, a local fiber arts group, will begin at 7 p.m. A silent auction will benefit the Grand Valley Zoological Quest and light refreshments will be served. ■ An art reception and awards presentation for “A Passion for Pastel,” the Pastel Society of Colorado Member Show, will be from 5:30–8 p.m. Friday, March 7, at Around the Corner Art Gallery, 447 E. Main St., in Montrose. The exhibit features more than 60 artists, and will be on display through March 31. Music for the reception will be performed by a three-piece New Orleans jazz band.
