Game 4: Connors State 10, Navarro 9

Yariel Gonzales drove in four runs and Kevin Rivas kept second-ranked Navarro (Texas) College’s hitters at arm’s length for 6 2/3 innings to lead No. 3 Connors State (Okla.) State College to a 10-9 victory in the final game of the opening day at the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series.

Gonzales hit a two-run triple in the third inning for a 3-0 lead, and Christian Perez made a run-saving catch in the eighth to end the Bulldogs’ rally. With two runs in and a runner on second, Navarro’s John Clay Reeves hit a line drive, but Perez got a great jump on the ball, slid and caught the ball in the web of his glove, rolling and keeping control of the ball.

Rivas allowed seven runs on eight hits and struck out five for the win.

Connors State (53-9, 1-0 JUCO) gets Sunday off and faces top-ranked Spartanburg Methodist at 2 p.m. Monday. Navarro (43-16, 0-1) plays Walters State at 2 p.m. Sunday in an elimination game.
