Grammy-winning musician offers horn performances, classes

Legendary horn soloist Barry Tuckwell returns to Grand Junction to teach master classes and give free performances.

Tuckwell, a native of Australia, was the principal horn player for the London Symphony Orchestra for 13 years and has had a solo career with performances around the world.

Tuckwell has more than 150 recordings and has won three Grammy Awards, according to a news release.

He is currently a professional fellow at the University of Melbourne. This is the fourth summer Tuckwell and the Barry Tuckwell Institute have visited Grand Junction and worked with horn players in workshops at Mesa State College.

The Barry Tuckwell Institute faculty at Mesa State this summer is made up of three distinguished horn players: Mary Bisson, a member of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra horn section; Greg Hustis, principal horn of the Dallas symphony; and Jean Rife, a natural horn specialist who teaches at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New England Conservatory and Longy School of Music.

Joining the faculty is internationally acclaimed pianist Tomoko Kanamaru from the College of New Jersey.
