High Desert Opera to offer three ‘Sound of Music’ performances

Members of the High Desert Opera will offer performances of “The Sound of Music” on Friday, Dec. 31, and Saturday, Jan. 8, at Avalon Theatre.

The High Desert Opera will prepare to greet the new year with a presentation of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, and again at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at Avalon Theatre, 645 Main St.

Adult tickets start at $19. Tickets for seniors and children younger than 12 start at $15. Advance tickets can be purchased at Roper Music, 136 N. Fifth St., at highdesertopera.org or by calling 523-9605.

“The Sound of Music” premiered as a Broadway musical in 1959 and was adapted and made into the 1965 film starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. The film won multiple Academy Awards.

The audience will notice a few differences between the Grand Junction stage performance and the movie; however, the story of Georg and Maria von Trapp remains very much the same.

Director James Werner cast all local talent, including 10 children, to play the parts of the seven von Trapp children. Some of the roles were double cast.
