The choices
The survey says: movie theater popcorn is better with butter; the Summer Olympics are more fun to watch than the Winter Olympics; and Blake Shelton is more liked than Alison Krauss.
Don’t agree? Well, that’s kind of the point of opinions.
Everyone has a preference when it comes to what they find entertaining and what they don’t.
I went out and about in Grand Junction with a 10-question survey from the areas of music — The Beatles or Rolling Stones? — books, TV and comics to learn a little more about what people prefer and why.
CASSIE DOWNEY, 26, left, and AMY YANCEY, 27, are best friends and roommates. They also are both art instructors at Creative Avenues, but they don’t necessarily agree on their entertainment.
Alison Krauss & Union Station or Blake Shelton?
Cassie: Alison Krauss because I know Blake Shelton’s (music), and I’m not a huge country fan.
Amy: I like Blake Shelton. His songs, to me, have a lot more meaning. I grew up on country.
Spider-Man or Batman?
Cassie: Spider-Man. Marvel (Comics) is better than DC (Comics) in all shape and form.
Amy: Spider-Man because he’s more relatable. Batman is a rich guy with all these gadgets.
“American Idol” or “Dancing With the Stars”?
Cassie: Neither. They are both horrible.
Amy: Neither. I’ve watched them both. I’m not big into reality TV.
Paperback or eBooks?
Cassie: Paperback. I prefer holding the books, and I like the smell of new books.
Amy: Paperback. I like the weight of the paperback, and the smell.
Summer Olympics or Winter Olympics?
Cassie: Winter because they are the ones I watch the most. My grandma watched them all the time, and I like the snowboarders.
Amy: I like the summer ones. I really couldn’t care less about most sports, but the summer has the equestrian events, and I like horses.
Justin Bieber or Justin Timberlake?
Cassie: Neither. I hate them both.
Amy: Justin Timberlake, if I had to pick one. Anyone’s better than Bieber.
Movie theater popcorn with butter or without?
Cassie: With butter. If I’m gonna die, I’m gonna die happy.
Amy: With butter. Without is just gross.
The Beatles or the Rolling Stones?
Cassie: The Beatles. I know more of their music.
Amy: That’s a tough one. The Beatles were more of my mom’s generation, but I definitely know more of their songs.
Harry Potter or Twilight?
Cassie: Harry Potter. (She answered before the question was finished.)
Amy: Harry Potter. I love Harry Potter. I read the last three books in one night.
Morning person or night person?
Cassie: Night person. I’m not good with mornings.
Amy: I’m a night person. I can take a nap at any given point except for after 6 p.m.
RICH PARRISH, 64, has been a volunteer with Crime Stoppers since 1983.
Alison Krauss & Union Station or Blake Shelton?
Blake Shelton because I know him better.
Spider-Man or Batman?
Spider-Man because I like the movies better. Batman is really dark.
“American Idol” or “Dancing With the Stars?”
Neither one.
Paperback or eBooks?
I like them both almost equally.
Summer Olympics or Winter Olympics?
Summer. They are so much more exciting to me.
Justin Bieber or Justin Timberlake?
(Laughing) Neither one of those.
Movie theater popcorn with butter or without butter?
With butter of course.
The Beatles or Rolling Stones?
The Beatles, definitely. They were at the forefront of so much of what happened in music.
Harry Potter or Twilight?
Harry Potter. I read a copy with my daughter, and that’s what got her started reading. Now, she reads all the time.
Morning person or night person?
Morning. Between 5 and 5:30 a.m. I love to walk early in the morning. It’s a wonderful way to start the day.
MICHAEL CHAMBERLAIN, 22, is a junior at Colorado Mesa University, studying mass communication.
Alison Krauss & Union Station or Blake Shelton?
Blake Shelton. I like his deep voice, and he adds more emotion to his songs.
Spider-Man or Batman?
Batman because he has the gadgets and the smarts.
“American Idol” or “Dancing With the Stars?”
“American Idol.” It’s the show I’ve watched in my family for the past couple years.
Paperback or eBooks?
I would say paperback because if you are having malfunctions with electronics you can’t exactly access the book.
Summer Olympics or Winter Olympics?
Summer because they have my favorite sport: basketball.
Justin Bieber or Justin Timberlake?
Justin Timberlake. He’s a singer I’ve actually grown up listening to.
Movie theater popcorn with butter or without?
I like popcorn with sugar, so I’ll say without.
The Beatles or Rolling Stones?
I’ve never listened to either of them. Well, I’ve heard both a couple times, but I don’t listen to them, so I’ll say Rolling Stones because they are rock.
Harry Potter or Twilight?
I’ll say Twilight because I’ve seen Twilight and Harry Potter movies, but Harry Potter doesn’t try to mix up the movies. In Twilight, they try to add more characters. Besides, I’m not into the magic side of stuff.
Morning person or night person?
Night person. I do not like waking up in the morning, so I try to schedule all my classes in the afternoon.
HALEY STOFFEL, 19, is a sophomore at the University of Hawaii. (Yes, the University of Hawaii. I made her repeat it.)
Alison Krauss & Union Station or Blake Shelton?
Blake Shelton because I love him. He’s one of my favorite singers.
Spider-Man or Batman?
Batman because he wears the black suit.
“American Idol” or “Dancing With the Stars?”
“American Idol.” I don’t like “Dancing With the Stars.” I watched it once, and it was boring.
Paperback books or eBooks?
eBooks. I have a Kindle Fire, and I love it. It’s so much easier to read a textbook on the Kindle.
Summer Olympics or Winter Olympics?
Summer. I have more time to watch them, and the swimming and gymnastics are exciting.
Justin Bieber or Justin Timberlake?
Dangit, I like both of them. I like their music. Justin Timberlake is definitely more attractive, but Bieber has a baby face.
Movie theater popcorn with butter or without?
With. Popcorn’s not popcorn without butter.
The Beatles or Rolling Stones?
The Beatles. I’ve heard more of their stuff.
Harry Potter or Twilight?
Twilight. I don’t like Harry Potter, and I love my vampires and werewolves.
Morning person or night person?
I’m definitely more of a morning person.
RACHEL MADSEN, 18, is a nanny for a Grand Junction family with three young boys.
Alison Krauss & Union Station or Blake Shelton?
Blake Shelton because I actually know who that is.
Spider-Man or Batman?
Spider-Man. He’s cooler.
“American Idol” or “Dancing With the Stars?”
I don’t really watch either of those. I’d go with “So You Think You Can Dance.”
Paperback or eBooks?
Paperback. You can get more into the book when you are actually holding it. I read a lot.
Summer Olympics or Winter Olympics?
Winter. I snowboard.
Justin Bieber or Justin Timberlake?
Justin Timberlake. I don’t like Justin Bieber.
Movie theater popcorn with butter or without?
With butter. I cook. I love butter. Butter is one of my things.
The Beatles or Rolling Stones?
The Beatles. I just really like them. I’ve kind of grown up with them.
Harry Potter or Twilight?
Harry Potter. Twilight sucks.
Morning person or night person?
I’m kind of both. It’s in the middle of the day that I want to crash.
AGNES KIEFER, 101, right, and KENNETH HOOKER, 60, are the oldest and youngest residents, respectively, at the Atrium of Grand Valley Assisted Living.
Alison Krauss & Union Station or Blake Shelton?
Kenneth: I like them both. My favorite would be Alison Krauss because she plays a mean fiddle.
Agnes: I’m lost. (She didn’t know either.)
Spider-Man or Batman?
Kenneth: Batman. He was more realistic.
Agnes: Neither one interested me very much. (Her favorite superhero: Abraham Lincoln.)
“American Idol” or “Dancing With the Stars?”
Kenneth: I’d have to say “American Idol” because they go on to do something with their talents.
Agnes: I’m lost there, too.
Paperback books or eBooks?
Kenneth: Paperbacks or hard covers. I don’t like eBooks.
Agnes: I never cared much for paperbacks. I always read the older authors.
Summer Olympics or Winter Olympics?
Kenneth: Winter Olympics definitely. In 1968, I tried out for the U.S. Ski Team. I was 33rd in the nation in the downhill and giant slalom.
Agnes: I think summer. You can do more in the summer, picnics or hikes in the mountains. I wasn’t very much for skiing.
Justin Bieber or Justin Timberlake?
Kenneth: (Pointed his finger down his throat and fake gagged.)
Agnes: Boy, I’m lost.
Movie theater popcorn with butter or without?
Kenneth: Probably without so that way I don’t have to wipe my hands on my blue jeans.
Agnes: With butter. I like butter.
The Beatles or Rolling Stones?
Kenneth: Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones. I really liked him in the movie he was in with Emilio Estevez. (1992’s “Freejack”)
Agnes: I’ve heard them both. I think probably The Beatles. I thought they were pretty good for what they were doing.
Kenneth: Definitely not Bing Crosby?
Agnes: Oh, no.
Harry Potter or Twilight?
Kenneth: I have a problem with both.
Agnes: Who? Gary? I’ve heard of Potter. I’ve heard the name, that’s all.
Morning person or night person?
Kenneth: I love a morning sunrise on a lake up on Grand Mesa with the fog coming up.
Agnes: I’m not a morning person. It takes me all morning to get down here (the Atrium lobby). I’m so slow.
