Inmate charged with killing cellmate in 2011
STERLING — An inmate accused of beating and strangling his cellmate at the Sterling Correctional Facility has been charged with second-degree murder.
The Sterling Journal-Advocate reports (http://bit.ly/14BBrKP ) 41-year-old Michael Carr was charged Thursday for the Nov. 25, 2011, death of Mark Hanson. Prosecutors waited to file charges because of a large caseload and lack of staff.
Carr’s arrest affidavit says he denied killing Hanson, who was serving a two-year prison term for repeatedly failing to register as a sex offender. But investigators say he told a fellow inmate he planned to kill Hanson because he was a “total waste of space” who “snored all night.”
Carr is serving a 20-year sentence for assault after he shot his mother in the back in 2010.
