Library’s Palisade plans hit a snag

The Mesa County Public Library District scuttled plans to relocate the Palisade branch library into a former coffee shop downtown after concluding the price tag to improve the building is too high.

The library Board of Trustees voted last month to buy the former Tucan Coffee House at 239 S. Main St. for $300,000. Officials planned to spend an additional $75,000 for improvements, roof repairs and costs associated with moving the branch.

Library spokesman Bob Kretschman said Wednesday the library, upon further inspection and investigation of the 2,800-square-foot, two-story building, determined it would be too expensive to install an elevator, add restrooms and complete other work needed to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The ground-level floor of the building is fully accessible for people with disabilities, but the basement needed upgrades to make it accessible.

“Based on our needs, the modifications we were going to need to make were going to be pretty considerable,” Kretschman said, adding he didn’t know the cost of the needed improvements.

Kretschman said library officials knew accessibility was a potential issue it needed to look at while doing due diligence.

“It’s like buying a house,” he said. “You sign a contract, then you have the inspector come and you look at everything and you decide.”

Kretschman said the library has turned its attention to a single-floor structure downtown, and the board could vote on a contract as soon as its June 30 meeting. He declined to identify the location of the building.

Prior to settling on the former Tucan building, the library considered moving into the former Palisades National Bank building at 305 S. Main St. Library officials previously rejected an offer from the town of Palisade to move into a 5,000-square-foot space inside the Palisade Civic Center at 711 Iowa Ave.

The Palisade branch currently operates out of a 3,300-square-foot space next to the civic center. Its lease is up Aug. 31.
