Boxed In

In the calendar on my desk

each day is numbered.

Each day is enclosed in a square.

I mark through the square

when the day is gone.

The blue jay in the tree

outside my window

has no desk, no calendar.

No squared off days,

no numbered squares.

He is here in the arc of the sun.

Today is today.

With a mark of my pen,

it is gone.
