Lines West: Feb. 14

Night in the City

Black, engulfing all who gaze

into my inviting depths.

Smooth, spanning over everything

with a tight, uniform look.

Smoky, as the factory towers

that spew out below.

Winter, giving a chill to

any that walk through me.

Salty, sprinkled stars onto

my enormous ebony slate.

— Austin Magura (grade 8)

Yankee Doodles

The boys on the block

collected baseball cards

that used to come

with bubble gum.

I liked the gum,

traded my cards for more

until I was caught up

in the Yankee mystique,

names like

Yogi, Mickey, Whitey.

Things are different now.

You can buy stacks

of trading cards,

so the fun of accumulating

them one by one

in bubble gum is gone,

and, OH!

my mom threw

away my baseball cards.
