Spiders

Coming down the road from Placitas

after wild leaf tea with Larry Goodell

I flash on the first time I made the grade

up to the village — 20 years younger

Anxious & excited. Not knowing what

to expect from a poet I’d not yet met

And a tarantula caught my speeding eye

So I pulled over. Walked it off the macadam

My first assist for a spider. A species far down

the Linnaean ladder from wise old me. Or so

I’d thought. Been taught. Until here, high

above the Rio Grande, but below

the Sandias, in the state where I was

conceived, I at last fell in love with

what I’d always feared

Learning to match my gait

with the slow deliberate

lumber of an insect
