Lines West: Last Day of School

Last Day of School

They are free of backpacks

and sack lunches,

alarms and class schedules.

They glide on their bikes

through showers of cotton

towards home.

They are between the grip

of curricula,

beyond the reach

of grades.

For three months

they are no one’s students

in no one’s class

but summer’s.
