Local Red Cross plans phone-a-thon for disaster relief
Red Cross volunteers in Grand Junction will conduct a “phone-a-thon” Saturday for Haiti disaster relief.
Volunteers will take phone calls at 242-4851 from donors, as well as meet with people to discuss the relief efforts in the headquarters at 506 Gunnison Ave., said David Hintch, executive director of the Western Colorado Chapter of the American Red Cross.
“We’re asking families and businesses to come in and donate,” said Hintch, who worked for six years in the Caribbean nation that was struck Tuesday by an earthquake that measured 7.0 on the Richter Scale.
Hintch will be happy to discuss the country and explain the relief activities supported by donations to the Red Cross, he said.
Donors who give $1,000 or more will receive a free first-aid kit, and the Red Cross will have refreshments available for people who want to get more information in person, Hintch said.
“We’re hoping to have some businesses step up,” he said.
The phone-a-thon will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will be operated much like a telethon, Hintch said.
Donors who walked into the headquarters Thursday contributed about $4,000 to the Haiti relief efforts, and many more people called to pledge donations to the cause, Hintch said.
“We’ve had people from all walks of life” visit the headquarters, he said. “They’re connecting with the humanity of the situation. I’m new to the West Slope, and I’m impressed.”
A Grand Junction shoe store, meanwhile, issued a call for “gently used” sandals and athletic shoes to be dropped off so they can be sent to Haiti. Brown’s Shoe Fit Co., 425 Main St., is asking for the donations as part of its support of the charitable group Soles4Souls.
Soles4Souls distributes mostly closed footwear during the winter and is seeking footwear for the Caribbean climate.
“PLEASE, if you have any sandals laying around you won’t wear again, bring them into us quickly, and we will see that they get to those who most need them, as fast as possible,” the company said in a news release.
Donors will get a 10-percent-off coupon for use any time at Brown’s Shoe Fit Co.
