Main library gets fix-ups; branch due by year’s end

Parking is at a premium at the Mesa County Library District’s main building, 530 Grand Ave, with construction under way to improve safety and curb appeal.

Construction crews are tearing up portions of the parking lot to improve the library’s landscaping, install lighting and an electric sign. The exterior construction is funded in part by a grant from the Downtown Development Authority.

On the inside of the main library, workers are making safety improvements to the children’s reading area.

The objective, library director Eve Tallman said, is “to improve the safety and the curb appeal, if you will, of the library.”

While construction proceeds, patrons unable to find a parking spot in the lot should be able to find room for their vehicles north of the library on Ouray Avenue or to the east of the library in the parking lot on the corner of Sixth Street and Grand Avenue.

“Right now, half the parking lot is closed,” Tallman said.

She anticipated construction to continue until early December.

The children’s area had to be upgraded for safety’s sake, due to an insurance issue, Tallman said.

“That should be completed around the same time (as the parking lot improvements),” she said.

In addition to changes at the main library, the Orchard Mesa Branch is swiftly becoming a reality.

“That will probably become one of busiest libraries when it opens,” she said.

The Orchard Mesa branch resides within Orchard Mesa Elementary School. The new stand-alone branch will be in a strip mall at 230 Lynwood St., next to Domino’s Pizza.

It is anticipated to open around the end of the year, Tallman said, adding, “That is optimistic.”
