Mesa Theater to reopen gradually

When Mesa Theater & Club owner David Prather closed the business in January, he advertised a summer return. Summer is almost here, and Prather plans to reopen, but he will do it on a smaller scale, at least initially.

After a complete renovation, the front lounge area only of Mesa Theater will reopen Wednesday, July 13, maybe sooner, Prather said.

Lounge hours will be 5 p.m. to midnight, Wednesday through Saturday, with live entertainment, an expanded menu and no cover charge.

The bathrooms also will be remodeled, and customers will notice a modernization of the theater’s exterior.

The main area, where larger, live-music acts play behind the lounge, won’t reopen until a show from singer/songwriter James McMurtry at 8 p.m. July 26.

Updates to the main room won’t be finished before the McMurtry show, so any shows staged at Mesa Theater between now and Aug. 25 — the official grand opening — will be smaller, more intimate affairs.

Consequently, only 250 seats will be sold for the McMurtry show, which Prather is putting on with Sandstone Entertainment’s Ron Wilson. Tickets for the McMurtry show are on sale now through TicketsWest at 243-TIXS, or at Back Porch Music and City Market stores.

The renovations in the main room include the expansion of the upstairs sky bar, removal of the 1950s curtain covering either wall, plus acoustic and lighting updates, Prather said.

Prather said he has no regrets about his decision to close Mesa Theater in January.

Every time he saw the Main Street construction during the winter, it reinforced his thought that “there is no way I could have staged 300 people coming to my venue.”
