Montrose in high gear for race
The USA Pro Cycling Challenge race is coming to Montrose and folks are excited about it, so excited that a number of events are planned around the city’s Stage 2 start of the race on Tuesday, Aug. 21.
Here’s what’s happening in Montrose, according to montroseusaprochallenge.com:
SATURDAY, AUG. 18
■ Noon to 2 p.m. — A Bicycle Rodeo for children and youth is planned in the hockey rink at Baldridge Park. There will be a skills course, a safety talk, bike inspections and helmet fittings.
■ 3 p.m. — A Downtown Poker Cruise & Crawl will begin at Amelias Hacienda Restaurante downtown. It’s $5 to participate, and proceeds go to help the Montrose Area Bicycle Alliance get new bike racks that will be put around the city. Sign up at montroseusaprochallenge.com.
■ 6 p.m. — A Bike-In Movie Night will be at Rotary Park with food vendors and music from Rusty George & Alan Vigil from 6–8 p.m., special speaker Bruce Thompson from “American Flyers” at 8 p.m. and a showing of “American Flyers” at 8:30 p.m.
SUNDAY, AUG. 19
■ 9 a.m. — Take your road bike on a 27-mile tour of the parade loop of the USA Pro Challenge Stage 2 start on the Montrose Area Bicycle Alliance Club Ride. There is a $25 entry fee. Information and a registration form download can be found at montroseusaprochallenge.com/clubride/
MONDAY, AUG. 20
■ 4:30 p.m. — Gates open for Rally with the Wailers concert. Read more about this concert in the Music Scene on page XX.
TUESDAY, AUG. 21
■ 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m. — Take in the Start Village at the Montrose Pavilion. There will be live music, food and drink, games and a jumbotron on which the day’s race will be shown live.
■ 11:25 a.m. — Stage 2 of the race begins at 11:25 a.m. at the Montrose Pavilion.
