Mural Jam adds array of individual events this year
Chalk it up to popularity, but Mural Jam has added chalk art to this year’s event, which features aerosol paint competitions, as well as a skateboarding competition.
Set for 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at Westlake Skate Park, 325 W. Orchard Ave., Mural Jam is sponsored by the city of Grand Junction and the Commission on Arts and Culture.
The artist competition offers a cash prize for the People’s Choice Mural. Murals will be painted on panels that will embark on a yearlong traveling exhibit, then will be auctioned off to raise funds for improvements at the skate park, such as the installation of permanent fixtures to display artwork and to clean up the skate surface.
And then there’s the addition of chalk art.
“We have been wanting to expand Mural Jam to include chalk art for a few years,” wrote organizer Naomi Barlow, in an email to The Daily Sentinel.
“It is our hope that we can grow the event here to become a chalk art/mural festival downtown.”
Cost is $5 per entry for the aerosol, chalk and skateboarding competitions. Spectators can watch for free.
