Music Scene: Jake Shimabukuro, others

Jake Shimabukuro

He plays a little guitar, but he plays it big.

Ukulele wizard Jake Shimabukuro will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, in the Recital Hall of the Moss Performing Arts Center at Colorado Mesa University, 1231 N. 12th St.

The Hawaiian native first picked up a ukulele at age 4, a move that led to a skyrocketing career on the island and an initial brush with fame on YouTube, according to a news release.

As he grew as a respected and popular musician, Shimabukuro was declared a musical “hero” by Rolling Stone magazine and earned comparisons to Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis, the release said.

Shimabukuro’s 2011 album, “Peace, Love, Ukulele” debuted No. 1 on the Billboard World Charts. His “ambitious follow-up,” according to the news release, is 2012’s “Grand Ukulele,” on which Shimabukuro collaborated with legendary producer/engineer Alan Parsons, who is well-known for his work on Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of The Moon” and The Beatles’ “Abbey Road.”

“Given that Shimabukuro first won acclaim for a YouTube video of him covering George Harrison’s ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps,’ it’s no surprise that ‘Grand Ukulele’ features a number of wonderful reinterpretations, including Sting’s ‘Fields of Gold’ (with Parsons cameo-ing on keyboards) and, most prominently, Adele’s ‘Rolling in the Deep,’ a seemingly ubiquitous song given new life on the four-string,” the release said.

Tickets for the reserved-seating CMU show cost $35 and can be purchased at local City Market stores, Back Porch Music, Triple Play Music, or 243-8497. There will be wine and light foods available for purchase beginning at 6:30 p.m. in Moss Performing Arts Center’s lobby.
