A free concert presented by the Western Slope Concert Series will usher in the Halloween season with a mixture of themes.

“Songs of Death, Darkness and Romance” will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, in the Love Recital Hall of Colorado Mesa University’s Moss Performing Arts Center, 1231 N. 12th St.

The spirit of “sadness” and “death” will be represented in pieces by Franz Schubert, Gerald Finzi and Giacomo Puccini performed by bass-baritone Jordan Christie and Western Slope Concert Series director and pianist Kathryn Mientka, according to a news release from the concert series.

“Love” also will have its moment during the concert through show tunes such as “Some Enchanted Evening” from the musical “South Pacific” and “Vi Ravviso” by Vincenzo Bellini.

Christie “is a local favorite, heavily involved in the singing community and admired for his hauntingly beautiful voice,” the release said.

He has performed with the Western Colorado Chorale, the Celtic band FEAST and Il Divo Colorado. He will make his High Desert Opera debut in the New Year’s Eve production of “Guys and Dolls” as Sky Masterson.

“Guest mezzo-soprano Belle Weathers will help keep beauty alive after all in duets including ‘I’ve Never Been In Love Before’ from ‘Guys and Dolls,’” the release said.
