Music Scene: ‘Die Walkyrie’

A tragic tale of hidden identities takes to the big screen during a special presentation of Richard Wagner’s “Die Walküre,” live from its opening night in Milan, Italy.

Audiences in Grand Junction will have two opportunities to watch the opera: live from Milan at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, and an encore screening on Wednesday, Dec. 15, with time to be announced.

Both showings will be at Carmike Cinema 7, 590 24 1/2 Road.

“Die Walküre” (English: The Valkyrie), is the second of the four operas that form the cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung) by Wagner.

Wagner took his tale from the Norse Volsunga Saga, a late 13th century Icelandic prose rendition of the origin and decline of the Völsung clan, and a collection of Old Norse poems called Poetic Edda, according to Wikipedia.

The tragic opera follows the fate of twins separated early in life, adversaries, heros, adultery and incest.

Tickets are $25.
