New toffee and brittle company in Junction

Single parents Todd Braley and Angela Maynard were looking for a way to earn extra money without spending too much time away from family.

The solution was to combine family recipes and start a homemade toffee and peanut brittle company. The boyfriend-girlfriend team recently began making the candy under the name Uncle Milty’s Homemade Toffee & Brittle in the Grand Junction Business Incubator. They sell it through their Facebook page, and a website will be launched next week,

The company is named after Braley’s father, Milton, who made the peanut brittle each year for Christmas using Milton’s grandmother’s recipe. Braley asked for the recipe so he could sell the product and placed his father’s face on the labels for the candy.

Maynard has been making a family recipe for almond toffee for 20 years. Maynard works at Alpine Bank during the day, but she said she loves making candy in her off-time.

“I’d love to eventually retire and be the next Mrs. Fields, but for now we want to put it out there and see where it leads,” she said.

A storefront isn’t out of the question down the line, but Braley said he doesn’t “want to get the cart before the horse.” For now, the two are content to sell their candy through Facebook and on their website.

So far, they’ve had order requests for graduation parties, weddings, bridal showers and from Realtors who want to give the candy out at closings. Black Jack Pizza is offering a deal where customers who buy a medium, five-topping pizza get a half-pound of the toffee or brittle free.

The toffee costs $13 per pound or $8 for a half-pound, and the brittle costs $8 a pound or $5 for a half-pound.

“We understand people don’t have a ton of money, so we want to keep it affordable,” Braley said.

Braley, who also owns Record Setter DJs and video production business Infinity Media Productions, said the candy has gotten a good reception from those who have tasted it.

“It’s not too sweet, and it’s really easy on the teeth,” he said.
