Passion for beer in Montrose
The Horsefly Brewing Co. opened one year ago in a cramped, 1,000-square-foot building on the eastern edge of Montrose. Today the brewery is a much roomier 3,000 square feet closer to downtown. It’s been remodeled for its fans and their love affair with craft beer.
Horsefly opened its doors to the public Thursday, with limited hours, after months of moving and preparing the new location at 846 E. Main St., where the business also will become a large-scale brewing operation. According to Nigel Askew, co-owner and head brewer, the reason for the move was simple: demand for hand-crafted brew grew.
“We had a one-and-a-half barrel brewing system at the old place, which is extreme for a home brewer, but tiny for a microbrewer ... but things just took off. It was the middle of winter, and we were inundated. A lot of people are passionate about their beer, I guess,” Askew said.
The new building, once a KFC restaurant, has the ambiance of a European-style pub — and ambiance built upon the laid-back atmosphere of its old facility once located next to a storage facility. The space is open and friendly. No Bud Light or NASCAR signs can be seen because Askew, along with co-owner Melanie Freismuth, wanted a place dedicated to hand-crafted beer, not just another bar. And so the walls, tables and chairs are decorated in a manner worshiping the culture of beer, welcoming the masses to enjoy a fresh hoppy pint.
Askew, a native of Zambia in Africa, has been brewing beer for several decades. He was once the president of a home brewers club in Los Angeles before moving to Montrose in 2004.
According to Askew, the initial one-and-a-half-barrel brewing system at the old facility has been replaced with a seven-to-10-barrel system set to begin soon. This will allow for much more volume to fill growlers, which the brewery sells for $15, and to keep up with general demand.
A pint of Horsefly’s Red, APA, Stout or Rassy Wheat beer is $3.75. The brewery also sells food and homemade soda. Askew said the brewery will feature seasonal beers throughout the year and rotate beers to offer new tastes.
The brewery is open every day except Tuesday, with hours of 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
