Photographer finds plenty of models flattered to do local pinup calendar

Catie Pitts is featured as Miss January in local photographer Brooke Lucas’ new pinup calendar.



Marilyn Monroe said, “The body is meant to be seen, not all covered up.” But if she were alive today, would she have shown you her tattoo?

“Yes,” giggled Brooke Lucas, the photographer behind “The Buzz Galz: A modern pinup calendar for 2011.”

“I think she would have had a shooting star,” Lucas said.

Lucas, 27, is a neophyte photographer, just learning to use her camera to create digital art.

“I realized that I could capture people at their best and I was hooked,” she said in explaining how she stumbled onto her newest creative passion — pinup imagery.

Inspired by the classically sexy look of Monroe, the calendar is reminiscent of the pinup calendars popular in the 1940s and ‘50s, except the scantily clad models are modern gals from Grand Junction, some with tattoos and body piercings. “I just love that vintage look — the beauty of it — and I think tattoos are beautiful,” Lucas said.

Lucas has spent the past year searching Facebook profiles for the best-looking local models. “I chose the best girls who represented that vintage look, but all the girls have very modern tattoos,” she said.

Most of the women she contacted were flattered to be asked to pose for the calendar. “They said, ‘I love pinup and I want to be in it,’ ” Lucas said.

The calendar features 12 local beauties in fun poses, such as on roller skates, taking a bath and enjoying a risqu&233; picnic.

“I just tried to come up with everyday ideas that were playful and classy,” Lucas explained. “I wanted to show that the average woman in Grand Junction could be glamorous.”

Lucas used mostly natural lighting and basic equipment to photograph the models at a variety of locations. Many of the models brought their own wardrobes, while others just brought shoes. Lucas tried to capture a bit of their personalities within each of the pictures.

“This was just a test to see if I could take good pictures,” Lucas said, “but then everybody told me to put it out there and see what happens.”

Lucas hopes the calendar will not only create a buzz but also help support her site, http://www.gjbuzz.com, which was created by Lucas and her husband, Brady, under their entrepreneurial company, Lucas Media Productions.

“We’re just starting out and we wanted a way to really show what we can do,” Lucas said.

Lucas Media Productions also offers senior and family portraits, wedding packages including disc jockey services, and website development.

For the lucky few who have had a sneak peak at the calendar, which will be available Oct. 10, “the reaction has just been amazing,” Lucas said.
