Pork ‘n’ Hops Challenge expects 50-plus teams for barbecue competition
Get ready for a lip-smacking good time at the Colorado Pork ‘n’ Hops Challenge on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 9-10, at Lincoln Park.
The event includes a professional Kansas City Barbeque Society competition, with more than 50 professional barbecue teams from across the country competing for more than $20,500 in cash, an amateur barbecue competition, sample tastings, entertainment and lots of family fun.
Festival hours are 4:30–10 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. General admission costs $5 on Friday and $20 on Saturday. Children age 12 and younger get in free.
The US Bank “People’s Choice” Professional Barbecue sampling will be at noon Saturday. Five bucks will get you 10 barbecue samples from the pros. Buy as many samples as your taste buds can handle and vote for your favorite (until all the samples are gone). Proceeds from the sampling will go to United Way of Mesa County.
A free shuttle will be available from the parking lot by the Cabela’s and J.C. Penney’s wing of Mesa Mall, near McDonalds. It will run every 30 minutes from 5–10 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday.
Family activities include Bump ‘n’ Jump and carnival rides, plus two extreme rides: FACEoffZ, safe competitive jousting fun; and TrapeZe, ever wanted to fly?
The music schedule for Friday features Pineapple Crackers at 4:30 p.m., Kahuna Beach Party at 6 p.m. and Archie Lee Hooker, featuring The Williams Brothers Band at 8 p.m.
On Saturday, New Country plays at noon, Jack + Jill at 1 p.m., Goodman Band with Jay Ketchum at 3 p.m., Bomshel at 6 p.m. and Chris Cagle at 8 p.m.
