Record Store Day a big celebration for independent shops

Saturday, April 16, is Record Store Day, the biggest celebration of the year for independent record stores and, more importantly, their customers.

One of the highlights of Record Store Day (recordstoreday.com) is the exclusive music releases that are available to independent stores that participate in the day.

Many of these releases are limited to 2,000 copies or less, worldwide, which makes most of them instant collector’s items. This also means that no single store or customer is likely going to receive everything that they want.

At Triple Play we registered, signed a pledge and sent in money to become an official Record Store Day participant. What that all means is that we agreed to follow the rules of protocol for record store day and not sell items on e-Bay before the actual day, as some stores and people have done in the past.

For our participation, we received a very large number of promotional items to give away Saturday. These items include various sampler CDs from record labels such as New West, Capitol, Labrador, Select-O-Hits and Sub Pop. There is even a sampler from France called “Le Disquare Day.”

There are two specific “Record Store Day” samplers that mostly contain songs that are yet to be released.

Triple Play also has received several booklets, such as Utne and Decibel, with download codes for loads of music, and one booklet with a CD of artists from the Coachella music festival in California.

The coolest promotional items, however, are four different samplers from Sub Pop Records with each artist/song on the disc represented by a postcard in the package.

Triple Play received a little more than half of the items we asked for, which isn’t too bad. We may have a few more that find their way into the store by Friday, April 15, but for the most part this is what we are going to have available Saturday:

There will be special 7-inch records from Jimi Hendrix, ZZ Top and Mastadon and the White Stripes.

Bruce Springsteen and the Kings of Leon each have a special two song 12-inch record available.

We mostly went after full length LPs for our choices, and we will be receiving special full-length vinyl from Flaming Lips, Country Joe and the Fish, Bob Dylan, Foo Fighters, Gorillaz, Grateful Dead, Ray LaMontagne, Mississippi John Hurt, Mumford and Sons, Nickel Creek, Ozzy Osbourne, Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam, Robbie Robertson, Skip James, Syd Barrett and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

We will also be receiving CDs from the Decemberists and Crowded House.

Besides making sure that everyone who comes into Triple Play on Saturday will leave with some free schwag, we are going to discount all of our vinyl that day, excluding Record Store Day items, and there will be other specials.

As the Main Street reconstruction has progressed we have reconstructed our vinyl records at Triple Play to make it easier for you.

Come down to Triple Play tomorrow and celebrate Record Store Day 2011 with us and all the independent record stores across the country.
