Regional pairings set for area 3A, 2A hoops teams
The Olathe High School girls basketball team received a 16th seed in the Class 3A state tournament, which will begin first-round play Friday at eight regional sites.
Also in the field of 32 teams is Grand Valley, which drew the 24th seed.
Olathe (17-5) will open with 17th-seeded Clear Creek (16-6) at Centauri High School, and the winner will play either top-seeded Centauri (19-2) or 32nd seed Ellicott (10-13) the next day at Centauri. Game times remain to be set.
Grand Valley (15-7) opens the tournament against No. 9 Bishop Machebeuf (16-5) at 5 p.m. Saturday at Eaton High School, and eighth-seeded Eaton (15-7) opens against No. 25 Roaring Fork (13-9) at 7 p.m. The winners will play at 1 p.m. Saturday with an Elite Eight berth on the line.
Olathe and Grand Valley are in the Donald Wilson Region and have the potential to face each other in the Elite Eight.
Moffat County (19-3) received the fifth seed and is hosting a regional in which it will play No. 28 Jefferson Academy (10-12) at 7 p.m. Friday, while No. 12 Kent Denver (18-4) faces No. 21 Middle Park (14-7) at 5 p.m. The winners play at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Class 2A girls state
In Class 2A, District 5’s Meeker, Paonia and Hotchkiss will play first-round regional games Friday in the girls state tournament.
District 5 champion Meeker (20-2) will face District 3’s third-place team, Dolores (15-6), while Sargent (13-9) will play Simla (18-4) in the Region 5 tourney’s first round Friday at Central High School in Grand Junction. The winners will play Saturday at Central. Game times remain to be set.
District 5 runner-up Paonia (17-4) will face the third-place team from District 1, Del Norte (14-8), in the Region 3 first round at Durango High School, while Ignacio (14-7) plays Sanford (12-11). The winners play Saturday at Durango. Game times are to be determined.
Hotchkiss (14-8), which finished third in District 5, draws District 4 runner-up Limon (16-5) in a first-round game Friday at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling. Akron (22-0) plays Alex Dawson (10-11) in the other regional semifinal. Winners play Saturday at the junior college. Game times remain to be determined.
Class 2A boys state
In Class 2A, District 5 state qualifiers Meeker and Paonia remain in the field of 32 boys basketball teams.
District 5 runner-up Meeker (16-6) plays District 2 runner-up Haxtun (16-5) in a Region 4 first-round game Friday at Mullen High School. Denver Christian (16-6) plays Highland (7-15) in the other regional semifinal. The winners play Saturday at Mullen. Game times are to be determined.
Paonia (10-12), which finished fourth in District 5, plays District 3 champion Ignacio (18-5) in Region 3’s first round Friday at Durango High School. The winner faces Sargent (12-10) or Lutheran (16-5) on Saturday. Game times remain to be set.
