Reviews mixed on royal wedding gown
People were either blissfully bleary-eyed or apathetically well-rested Friday morning after the live broadcast of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s marriage in Westminster Abbey.
“I thought overall it was stunning and beautiful and immaculate,” said Amelia Crysler, who awoke at 2 a.m. to watch the fairy tale unfold live on broadcast television. She baked scones for the occasion.
Crysler said she not only enjoyed the pomp of the ceremony, but she found the enthusiasm of the British people “awe-inspiring.”
“When the police were leading the crowd, it was just so peaceful, and I thought, ‘Oh, wow!’ ” she said.
That’s because the British people know how to do a royal wedding in style, said Claire Coldling, owner of GirlFlowers. Coldling is British and has dual citizenship in the United Kingdom and the United States.
The wedding made her homesick although she was able to talk with her mother via Skype early Friday.
“It was a very good day and one to be proud to be British,” she said.
She missed being part of the event, which included parties across London.
A lot of people here don’t care, she added.
Kyle Wagner, a bartender at Naggy McGee’s, was one of those. He doubted many had gotten up in the middle of the night to witness the wedding.
Many of those who did get up wanted to see Middleton’s dress and the fancy hats worn by the female guests.
“We’re known to be eccentric, and we’re proud of it,” Coldling said.
Middleton’s gown received mixed reviews.
“It was so clean and classic,” said Debora Beck, owner of Orr’s Trading Company, which sells many of Britain’s most popular teas such as English Breakfast and Earl Grey.
Judy Panozzo, owner of Victoria Rose Bridal, disagreed.
“It looked like a ‘queen-approved’ dress,” she said.
Panozzo expected to see Middleton wearing something much more glamorous and stylish.
“I would have rather seen her in more tulle, a Vera Wang look that would show her shape,” she said.
Panozzo doubts the dress will be fashion-setting in the wedding-dress industry.
“At least I hope not,” she said.
But, there was one thing everyone could agree on regarding the royal wedding.
“It was just so nice to see their joy and happiness,” Beck said.
It was nice to have good news and to witness a part of history, Crysler added.
