Rodeo fans can vote for their favorites for All-Star competition

Most big-time sports have their versions of an all-stars competition, and now professional rodeo will have its own. What’s more, the Rodeo All-Stars competition will take place in Denver at the National Western Complex and Events Center on April 4-6.

Rodeo fans have the opportunity to vote for their favorite rodeo stars in each event by visiting the website, Sixteen performers will be chosen to compete in each event, with two of the 16 chosen by fan voting.

“This gives people a chance to vote for local pro rodeo competitors, and perhaps see them compete in April at the Rodeo All-Star event in Denver,” said Loma veterinarian Bob Bessert, whose wife, Sammi Bessert, was sitting No. 13 among professional barrel racers in the most recent rankings.

Other top competitors from the Grand Valley include Tyler Smith of Fruita, who was ranked No. 1 in bull riding in the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association, and Garrett Tonozzi, also of Fruita, No. 7 among headers in team roping.

However, if you go to the Rodeo All Star website and click on “voting,” you won’t see the names of any of these local competitors listed. Only the most nationally recognizable names in each event are listed, but voters can type in the name of any currently active PRCA cowboy or Women’s Professional Rodeo Association cowgirl under the appropriate event.

Also, fans can vote as many as 50 times a day in each category until the voting closes March 9.

The cowboys and cowgirls who make it to the all-star event will compete for more than $140,000 in prize money.

Tickets to the three days of rodeo performances are available at all Murdoch’s Ranch & Home Supply stores. Murdoch’s is a primary sponsor of the Rodeo All-Star event, along with Cinch Jeans & Shirts.
