Sheepdog trials coming up in Meeker
Step into the fascinating world of the working class dog during the 26th annual Meeker Classic Sheepdog Championship Trials happening Wednesday through Sunday, Sept. 5–9, in Meeker.
Handler and dog teams from the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, South Africa and Brazil will compete for a $25,000 purse, plus $10,000 in cash prizes.
Along with five days of sheepdog herding competitions, visitors can browse a craft fair, food booths and sheepherders wagons and see service/therapy dog demonstrations. Spectators can watch not only the competitions but agility and flyball demos as well as demonstrations in spinning, weaving, felting and pottery. Take the kids to visit the petting farm then ride a free carriage to historic Meeker.
Entertainment is scheduled for each day with bagpippers, Celtic music and dancers set to perform Saturday and Sunday.
A barbecue and free outdoor Celtic music concert with Nelson and McKee will take place Saturday night on the courthouse lawn. A lamb barbecue will be served Sunday.
One-day or five-day passes will be sold at the entry gate. Cost is $10 for a one-day pass and $30 for a five-day pass for adults; $5 for a one-day pass or $15 five-day pass for those age 65 and older and ages 8–16.
Children younger than 8 will be admitted free.
