Skating has ended at West Lake pond
The ice is thin and dangerous at West Lake State Wildlife Area.
For some it’s a welcome sign of spring but for others it’s a sad end to a special winter pastime many Grand Junction residents haven’t been able to enjoy in many years.
The pond was sprayed with water by local firefighters in December as part of a training exercise. The water froze, creating a smooth layer of ice on the pond.
The firefighters created a standard ice hockey rink, and cleared a spot for figure skaters to enjoy.
It was used extensively by area residents throughout the unusually cold month of January.
