Sound Check: Bronco Country
Bronco Country is not a country band, and the name has nothing to do with the Denver Broncos. It’s just a name.
Granted, the four men who make up Bronco Country admittedly picked the name because they knew it’d get people talking, and they often are mistaken for a country band, but the name is nothing more than an homage to western Colorado.
Bronco Country is comprised of lead vocalist Matt Zurek, guitarist Griff Chiono, drummer Austin Martinez and bass player Colin Keefe. They play “high-energy rock ‘n’ roll that not everybody else is playing here,” Zurek said.
Formed almost a year ago, the members of Bronco Country met in Grand Junction through word of mouth and being around the local music scene, they said.
“I don’t think I’d be out of line to say we’re all friends,” Zurek said with a smile.
They only play original songs, so it has taken some time to build up a repertoire of tunes.
At their first show in May 2012, the band played three songs, Keefe said.
The band’s next local show is set for Friday, June 21, at Sabrosa Restaurante, 122 S. Fifth St., which is actually the site of its first gig.
Next month, Bronco Country will hit the road to perform at the popular and growing Underground Music Showcase in Denver.
