Sound Check: SPORK
Tiernan Boyd has the sass. Noah Mackrille has the look. Breeawnna Lyon and Megan Kreie have the talent. Sofia Benham has the passion and the drumsticks.
Together, they make up the rock band SPORK, which formed several months ago after Benham, 11, passed out fliers advertising for band members during the 2011 Fruita Fall Festival.
“I really wanted one of my own,” she said.
Benham held auditions and formed a band, which practices at Fruita’s Cavalcade every Monday afternoon. Kreie, 12, joined the group in November to play keyboard.
Lyon, 14, lives in Grand Junction, but everyone else lives in Fruita.
“I just love music,” Lyon said.
In addition to Kreie and Lyon, who does vocals, bass and saxophone, SPORK features Benham on drums; Mackrille, 12, on guitar while wearing his trademark tie; and Boyd, 12, on bass and vocals.
The band typically plays covers of popular rock and pop tunes, but Boyd has written a couple songs SPORK is working on.
The band’s next scheduled gig is at the Fruita Middle School Assembly on the last day of school. They are looking forward to it, and Lyon plans to get out of school at Bookcliff Middle School to play.
After that, SPORK has no set plans, but the music-lovers want to start playing more often, both in and out of Fruita.
