Sound check: Straight curves
JB and Jill Phillips have decided it’s time to rediscover their performance roots.
The Phillipses, who moved to the Western Slope nearly 17 years ago, formed the band Straight Curves after a 10-year hiatus from performance while they focused on raising their two children.
Straight Curves primarily plays covers of all sorts of music, from Stone Temple Pilots to Miley Cyrus.
“We’ll play anything that gets a smile or a laugh,” JB said.
Jill plays keyboard, sings and occasionally pulls out her saxophone. She also is the music teacher at Pomona Elementary School.
JB sings, plays guitar and occasionally plays drums and a ukulele. He is an assistant principal at Bookcliff Middle School.
Because Straight Curves is a two-person band, JB and Jill have found there are fewer musical tastes to please. Before their hiatus, the Phillipses played in multiple bands that almost exclusively covered classic rock tunes.
Straight Curves still plays rock music but without a full-time drummer or electric guitar player, the husband and wife team have discovered that they need to create their own sound.
Consequently, they have experimented with more audience participation on their songs with positive results, JB said.
To catch Straight Curves, head to its next show at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at the Palisade Brewery, 200 Peach Ave.
