Sound Check: Thomasina Brown Project

The Thomasina Brown Project is a soulful rock band that features covers and originals. Members of the band are, from left, Paul Kelly, Kirk Brosius, Thomasina Russell and Robb Huff.

Networking brought the Thomasina Brown Project together.

The Grand Junction music scene only has so many venues and so many musicians, so when someone is looking for a drummer, a bassist, etc, word of mouth spreads fast.

The networking around town, coupled with a mutual desire to play in a soulful rock band that features covers and originals, brought Thomasina Russell, Robb Huff, Paul Kelly and Kirk Brosius together to form the Thomasina Brown Project more than a year ago.

“I found the most talented guys around,” said Russell, whose nickname is Tammy. (The Brown was added because it sounded good, Russel said.)

Russell, who sings and plays acoustic guitar, is not the only one who feels fortunate to be part of the band.

Huff, a keyboardist and vocalist, joined the local group specifically because it would feature originals. The group adds more originals to its set list as it perfects them. Russell is a songwriter.

In addition to originals, the group takes advantage of its strong female lead on covers of songs from musicians such as Susan Tedeschi, Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt.

Thomasina Brown Project even has been known to throw out some jazz tunes.

“People like coming to listen to us because we don’t have a loud guitar,” said Brosius, who plays bass but also sings.

Huff acknowledged that the keyboard often takes the melodic lead in Thomasina Brown Project tunes.

The band performs next at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Wine Country Inn, 777 Grande River Drive, in Palisade. Cover is $5.
