The story of how Three Peace Band formed includes a van and the Internet.

In the 1970s, Mark Shortess and Bruce Safken met when Shortess recruited Safken while giving him a ride. Shortess, a bass player, has seen Safken playing drums in the area and knew Safken would be a great drummer for any band.

Since then, the duo has played in various area bands.

Then, about two months ago, Fidel Bell saw an online advertisement for a rocking guitar player to join Safken and Shortess to form a three-piece band. Bell moved to the area from Los Angeles a couple years ago.

And that was how Three Peace Band came to be.

The men have become the house band at Johnnie’s Tavern, 155 N. Mulberry St., in Fruita, where it is difficult to stay in a bar stool or at a table when the band gets going.

All three men sing, but it’s what the men can do with guitars and drums that has made them a popular entertainment option for Johnnie’s Tavern.

It’s tough to tell who has more fun when they play, the audience or the band members.

Three Peace Band plays from 7–11 p.m. every Friday and Saturday night at Johnnie’s Tavern.
