Sound Check: Shotgun Hodown
Fresh off a June release of its album “Necro-Nuclear High Desert Outlaw,” the local band Shotgun Hodown is ready to beef up its local gigs with a more regional and state presence.
The band is made up of Amanda Stevens on keyboard and vocals, D’Ray Canaday on bass and vocals, Rob Woltjer on guitar and vocals, Billy Thomas on drums and vocals and Bryan Collings on trombone, keyboard and other sounds he can produce through a computer.
The band has a difficult time defining its music, saying it plays a mix of rock, jazz, more burlesque-type music, etc.
Stevens calls it “outlaw” and “alternative.”
Shotgun Hodown performs mostly original tunes but plays a select few covers.
“Ninety percent of the covers we do, you’ve never heard of,” Woltjer said.
On a recent Tuesday afternoon, the band got together for a rehearsal/barbecue in the backyard of a Clifton area home, indicating the laid-back atmosphere of the band.
The band expected its next gig to be Saturday, Sept. 17, where it’s slated to play by day at the Western Colorado Botanical Gardens and by night at Tenacious Brothers Pub.
