Subway will serve alcohol at airport

The Grand Junction Regional Airport Authority’s board of directors Tuesday gave its unanimous approval to plans to serve alcohol at the facility’s under-construction Subway franchise.

The Subway, which officials aim to open on the terminal’s second floor by late April or early May, will offer a small selection of beer and wine.

“It will be the fourth of its kind,” Airport Manager Rex Tippetts said of a Subway also offering alcohol.

Tippetts said the airport hasn’t settled on the brands of beer and wine it will offer. The Airport Authority will hold the liquor license, he said.

The new restaurant will have counters on the secured side of the terminal for passengers with tickets, as well as the nonsecured side for those visiting or waiting to pick up passengers.

It will open 4:30 a.m. daily, and closing time will depend on the time of each day’s last outbound flight, Tippetts said.

Airport officials have said the project could cost up to $375,000, while operating revenues are anticipated around $380,000, with annual expenses of $260,000.

Airport Authority board member Doug Simons was not in attendance for Tuesday’s vote.
