RSS‘The Pirates of Penzance’ spectacle at CMU

A pirate apprentice falls in love with the major-general’s daughter, but the unfortunate detail of a leap year birthday keeps them apart.
Ridiculous? Of course. And it’s part of the comedic opera “The Pirates of Penzance.” This Gilbert and Sullivan musical will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 28 through March 2, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, March 6–9, and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 3, in Robinson Theatre in the Moss Performing Arts Center, 1231 N. 12th St.
Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $6 for students.
The production is a collaboration of Colorado Mesa University’s music and theater departments and will feature a live orchestra, comprised of instrumental music majors, most of whom are involved with the CMU Symphony and Wind Symphony. Carlos Elias will conduct.
“The fast-paced, fun and irreverent comic operetta tells the story of tender-hearted pirates, reluctant policemen, earnest lovers and an eccentric Major-General, all of whom are ridiculously bound by the dictates of duty,” a news release said.
The classic musical was last produced at the university in 1994 and directed by music faculty member Jack Delmore.
