Unitarian church finds home with deal for old library offices

Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Grand Valley is getting a home of its own.

The church, which has hosted services at 4:30 p.m. every Sunday for about the last year in the First Congregational United Church of Christ at 1425 N. Fifth St., has been bouncing from host to host for several years with the hope of eventually landing its own building. As of Tuesday, they are the new owners of the former Mesa County Central Library office building at 536 Ouray Ave. The church’s Rev. Wendy Jones said she hopes to move the congregation to the new address by March.

“We’re excited to have our own building we can call our own,” Jones said. “The next step is putting together a team to figure out how to turn it into a worship space.”

The church has about 90 members and Sunday attendance averages around 50 people, Jones said. She said the congregation hopes to offer Sunday morning services after the office building is remodeled for worship and opens in the spring.

Jones said private donors and an upcoming capital campaign will help pay for the church remodel and the purchase of the building north of the central library. The library no longer needed the building after recent remodeling and expanding the central library, one block south at 443 N. Sixth St. The 536 Ouray Ave. building housed administrative offices during construction and was at one time used by the collections management department. Before it was used by the library, the building served as a Rio Grande Federal Credit Union.

Library spokesman Bob Kretschman said the library sold the office building and an adjacent parking lot for $450,000. Kretschman said nearby properties, including library-owned lots along the east side of North Fifth Street between Ouray and Chipeta avenues and the Grand Junction Community Garden on the north side of the city block were not included in the sale and remain on the market.
