Wallace gets goal, prom date for GJ

Friday was an interesting day for Ashley Wallace.

Wallace scored in the fourth minute in the Grand Junction High School girls soccer team’s 5-0 win over Montrose at Walker Field.

After the game, she was face-to-face with one of three boys in leopard-print leggings and sombreros, a boy who simply wanted to ask her to prom.

“We had a good game. It started off hard, ended with a goal, which is good and everything, and at halftime, I got a little surprise,” Wallace said.

The boys made their first on-field appearance at halftime, making a quick sprint to the Tiger bench to get the attention of Wallace and teammate Morgan Leany.

“Everyone was just jaws dropped. I didn’t realize he had my name on the front (of his shirt) until he started saying my name,” Wallace said.

Pre-prom hijinks aside, the Tigers continued their solid team play, with four different girls scoring.

Two goals came from Stephanie Drake, who weaved her way through the penalty area to score in the fourth and 77th minutes.

“She’s a lot of fun to watch because she’s so dangerous with her speed and her touch,” Grand Junction coach Adrea Tilford said.

Shortly after Drake’s first goal, Wallace scored.

The Tigers spent the next several minutes taking shots but weren’t able to find the net until the 13th minute when Kyleigh Larson drew Montrose goalie Khristian Gilham out of the net.

Larson, who was playing in the center of the field, passed to her left, where Victoria Rentie finished for the goal.

In the second half, Grand Junction played at a slower pace and was stopped by Gilham, who finished with 11 saves.

Chelsea McNeill scored in the 65th minute and Drake posted the final goal of the game.

“I liked that we finished with a goal,” Tilford said. “I think it’s a good way to end a game.”

Grand Junction’s defense limited the Indians to seven shots.

Shari Yurick had three saves to notch the Tigers’ sixth shutout of the season.

Grand Junction (7-3, 5-2 SWL) plays Central on Thursday at Walker Field.
