Woman pitches tent on rooftop to raise $50,000
“Hi!” Carol Perry calls from the top of Smugglers’ Brew Pub, 2412 U.S. Highway 6&50.
On Saturday, patrons entering the restaurant were greeted by Perry as she pitched her head over the top of the building, stated her cause and used a fishing pole to lower down a bank bag, attached like bait on fishing line.
“A lot of people laugh and say it’s a good idea, because I’m attracting attention,” she said.
Attracting attention is exactly what Perry wants, and she plans to stay on the rooftop all week until she get lots of it — in the form of donations.
Perry runs the nonprofit Charlie Taylor Foundation, which was started to help people with any variety of needs and is named after her late father.
Her goal is to raise $50,000 to make a down payment on purchasing the Vega Lodge, outside of Collbran on the edge of Vega State Park.
The lodge could then be used as a place for the county’s youth to gather and do homework and other educational activities.
It could provide an opportunity for youths to run the business operations of renting on-site cabins and hook-up spaces.
The space could also be used for the nonprofit’s headquarters, Perry said.
“This is the start of it,” she said, her tent pitched on the roof and a camping chair nearby.
“I think this will be a good thing for the community.”
Perry said the foundation’s goal is to help others because she knows what it’s like to be down on your luck.
She lives with a brain injury, after being pushed off a deck. She spent some time being homeless and empathizes with those without homes because she knows “that’s not fun,” she said.
Taylor said the cost of the lodge is listed at $1.2 million, but she may be able to secure grants and other funding to purchase the resort.
All proceeds from the cabin rentals and hook-ups would go back to the organization and helping youths, she said.
