Youngsters receive books from Catholic Outreach

Shoppers at Barnes & Noble between now and the end of 2012 can opt to purchase an extra book at the store to donate to a local child.

The bookseller at 2451 Patterson Road is accepting donations of newly purchased books to give to Catholic Outreach’s Book-in-Hand program.

The program provides free books for young children who come to Catholic Outreach with their parents.

Sister Karen Bland, executive director of Catholic Outreach, said many parents who come to the organization seeking rental assistance, help with an electrical bill or other charitable services bring newborn to 6-year-old children with them because they are not in school. The goal of Book-in-Hand is to give each of those children a free book to take home with them.

“If they need rental assistance or help with an electrical bill, they certainly don’t have money for books. But research shows having books in the home is so important,” Bland said.

Donations for the year-round program come from service organizations, grants and efforts such as the one going on at Barnes & Noble, Bland said.

This time of year is typically the busiest for donations of all kinds to Catholic Outreach, according to Bland.

She said Catholic Outreach provided Mesa County Public Libraries with names of families in need to help the central library prepare a “Giving Tree” with the names of items family members would like for Christmas.

The nonprofit agency also received toys to give away that were left over after Toys for Tots’ holiday drive, and several food boxes will be given out before Christmas.
