TRAILS

Kokopelli’s Trail: 142 miles of easy to difficult mountain biking extending from the Loma Boat Launch west of Grand Junction south to Slick Rock, two miles from Moab, Utah.

Loops off Kokopelli’s Trail:

Grand Junction Lions Loops: 7.8 miles, starts at parking lot where the road from the Mack Interstate 70 interchange intersects with the gravel frontage road, allow two to four hours.

Mary’s Loop: 12.8 miles, starts at Kokopelli’s Trailhead. Follow the trail of the loop, Kokopelli’s Trail, to a point shy of the weigh station, turn left through the gate and follow the frontage road to a junction at mile 1.2 where the actual loop begins.

Tabeguache Trail: 144 miles of trail extending from the Savano Valley near Montrose to Monument Road near Grand Junction. RIVERFRONT TRAILS

Riverfront Commission: 245-0045

Audubon Trail: North of Colorado Highway 340 at the west end of Albertsons Shopping Center.

Blue Heron Trail: Follows north side of the Colorado River along Redlands Parkway and River Road.

Connected Lakes Trail, James M. Robb Colorado River State Park/Connected Lakes: Passes through Connected Lakes State Park and parallels Redlands Canal to Promontory Point.

James M. Robb Colorado River State Park/Corn Lake: Trail extends west of the lake connecting Corn Lake to the Colorado River Wildlife Area and beyond to 29 Road.

Palisade Trail: Located at the south end of Bentwood Drive in Palisade, crosses the Grand Valley Irrigation Canal and follows the Colorado River westward.

Riverside Park: On the east bank of the Colorado River at West Street and south of Colorado Highway 340 (Grand Avenue); access to both Audubon and Blue Heron Trail.

Watson Island: Loops around Watson Island.

NATIONAL AREAS

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park: South rim: Colorado Highway 347 off U.S. Highway 50 six miles east of Montrose; north rim, Colorado Highway 92, 11 miles east of Crawford, (970) 641-2337; deepest part of the Gunnison River Gorge; both rims offer lookouts, picnic tables and campgrounds. Campfire programs offered mid-June through Labor Day.

Colorado National Monument: Colorado Highway 340, south of Fruita, (970) 858-3617; sandstone canyons, rock formations, fossils and prehistoric remains of Indian cultures, camping, picnicking, nature trails and visitor center.

Curecanti National Recreation Area: Parallels U.S. Highway 50 between Gunnison and Montrose, (970) 641-2337; three lakes on the Gunnison River, Blue Mesa, Morrow Point and Crystal. Visitor centers located in Cimarron, Elk Creek and Lake Fork. Access to Morrow Point Dam is from Cimarron turnoff.

Dinosaur National Monument: Headquarters are two miles east of Dinosaur, (970) 374-3000, quarry is seven miles north of Jensen, Utah, (801) 789-2115. Quarry offers a sandstone cliff with more than 2,300 fossilized bones, the Colorado side offers canyons carved by the Yampa and Green rivers.

Sweitzer Lake: Three miles south of Delta on U.S. Highway 50, (970) 874-4258

NATIONAL FORESTS

Grand Mesa/Uncompahgre: Delta, (970) 874-6600; 3 million acres in west central Colorado, stretches from Continental Divide to Grand Mesa. Red Mountain Pass, Telluride, and Lizard Head highlight the area.

White River National Forest: Glenwood Springs, (970) 945-2521, more than 2 million acres containing Aspen, Keystone, Vail, Copper Mountain ski areas. The crown jewels of the region are the Maroon Bells near Aspen and millions of miles of trout streams that wind their way through the region.
