2014 Telluride Bluegrass Festival

The 41st annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Telluride Town Park opened June 19 as 10,000 music fans crowded the town to hear over 30 acts. Favorites included Sam Bush, Bela Fleck with the Colorado Symphony, Jerry Douglas, Leftover Salmon, and Tim O’Brien. Two members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Steve Winwood, who was in the band Traffic; and John Paul Jones, who was the bass player for Led Zeppelin and is now playing in the Dave Rawlings Machine, joined the fun.

Jack Stirling built several rock art sculptures during the 1950’s in the Utah desert south of 1-70 and just north of the Westwater boat launch.

Grande River Vineyards hosted their first concert of the season with local favorite Exit 42. The Heard it through the Grape Vine Concert series benefits local non-profits and Habitat for Humanity was this show’s beneficiary. Alpine Bank was the corporate sponsor that made it all possible.

Grand Junction’s Relay for Life was held last weekend at Long’s Family Park.  The overnight event gathered teams of supporters, caregivers and survivors as they walked to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

The art scene is sizzling in June and this weekend was full of receptions and openings. The featured First Friday art gallery reception at Aspen Photo Art was from 5:30p.m.-9 p.m. Friday, June 6, inside Main Street Bagels, 559 Main Street. At Colorado Canyons Gallery, 623 Main Street, Doug Loring was the featured artist at the First Friday reception. The 5th Biennial Contemporary Clay Exhibit opened at the Western Colorado Center for the Arts.

Rocker Ball drew a large crowd at Allen Unique Auto Museum on Friday June 6th.  The Grand Junction Rockestra, under the direction of founder Calvin Hofer is an extension of the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra and raises money for the GJSO and the Colorado Mesa University Music Department. The theme for Rockestra 3 was “Oh What a Night—That 70’s Show!
