Hearing for suspect in De Beque slaying
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Oct. 28 in the case of 43-year-old Rifle man Kenneth Earl Wright, who was charged with first-degree murder in the bludgeoning death of another man last month.
Wright is suspected of beating De Beque resident Steven Burdick, 52, with the handle of a sledgehammer Aug. 2. Wright is being held at the Mesa County Jail on $1 million bond.
Cocaine found in luggage at bus station
Western Colorado Drug Task Force officers found 10 ounces of suspected cocaine during a routine search of passenger luggage Wednesday at the Grand Junction Greyhound Bus Station, 230 S. Fifth St.
Officers found the substance in luggage being carried by Anthony Napoleon Kelley, 42, of Beverly Hills, Calif. Kelley told officers he was traveling to Kansas City via the Los Angeles to Chicago-bound bus.
Kelly was booked into Mesa County Jail on suspicion of one count of distribution, manufacture, sale or possession of a controlled substance.
According to the Grand Junction Police Department:
• A man is under investigation after two juveniles said they were sexually assaulted in the western part of the city.
• A thief stole tools from two vehicles behind a gated area at a business in the 2900 block of Gunnison Avenue on Tuesday.
According to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department:
• A thief stole $10 worth of light bulbs from a home at 454 Bing Lane on Wednesday.
• Vandals destroyed a portable toilet and tampered with four excavators Wednesday at a construction site at V and T roads.
