Vehicle fire extinguished

An Orchard Mesa neighborhood had its heat turned up late Sunday.

At 6:23 p.m., firefighters from the Grand Junction Fire Department rushed to battle a car fire. A Ford Bronco, parked in the driveway of a home at 273 1/2 Nashua Lane, was on fire and threatening to burn a house.

Residents of the home attempted to put the fire out with a garden hose, but could not.

The Bronco’s engine was engulfed in flames. The fire was eating its way into the passenger compartment of the vehicle, which was parked 10 feet from the house, said Doug Walsh, battalion chief.

It took firefighters just a couple minutes to extinguish the fire.

The best thing to use on a car fire is a chemical fire extinguisher, Walsh said. Using water on a car fire can spread the blaze if fuel is burning. Vehicles are full of flammables such as batteries and fuel tanks that can also explode, he said.

“You just have to be careful with car fires,” he said.

According to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department:

• Deputies responded to the 3200 block of D 1/4 Road on the report of a theft on Saturday morning. The resident told police her roommate moved out that morning and that he took her Coleman camping stove. She only knew that he was moving to Wyoming. The stove was valued at $50.

• Deputies responded Saturday morning to the 500 block of Jaquette Drive, where an elderly woman told deputies that around midnight Friday she heard three loud knocks on their door. By the time she got to the door, whoever it was had gone. She did see an empty white van with a disabiities placard.

• A resident in the 400 block of Bristol Court called deputies Saturday morning to report a suspicious incident. A person with a foreign accent called and said she owed his company money. The caller had some personal information of hers. She told the caller she would call police. The caller hung up and has not called back.

• A resident in the 500 block of Eastwood Street called deputies Saturday night, requesting extra patrols through her neighborhood. The woman said juveniles have been climbing her fence to go between neighborhoods after school and at night.

• Deputies stopped a vehicle Saturday night in the 3200 block of East Hall Court.

The driver, James Harris, 31, of Grand Junction, was booked into Mesa County Jail on suspicion of criminal impersonation, no proof of insurance, equipment violation and for driving while his license was suspended. He also was named in an outstanding warrant for failure to appear.
