Police converged on a Pear Park house on Thursday night after a report of a fatal shooting.
As of 11:30 p.m., Mesa County Sheriff’s Department officials had released few details and would only confirm that a fatality occurred at the home at 3045 Wedgewood Ave.
Dispatch reports indicated that a mother called 911 just before 10 p.m. to report that her 13-year-old boy had been shot with a pistol by his father.
The home is owned by Allen and Jaquette Grabe, according to Mesa County assessor records.
Michelle Caouette said she was visiting friends across the street from the house where the shooting occurred and described hearing someone yell, “Get down on the ground!”
Soon thereafter, police led a man away in handcuffs and into a police cruiser. Neighbors said the man led away is believed to be the father of the young victim.
Sheriff’s spokeswoman Heather Benjamin said the man detained had not been arrested and was being held for questioning. She said several others were taken in for questioning, as well.
Benjamin did not identify any of the people involved in the incident.
Neighbors near the home where the shooting happened said that they had seen the family around the neighborhood. The young boy had been known to go door to door selling candy for school fundraisers, and the mother of the household was known for selling Avon products to neighbors, neighbor Joann Martinez said.

Love is watching the sun rise, the waves crash at the ocean, snow gently falling, with someone. Smelling a rose, listening to a bird sing, tasting a strawberry, with someone. Buying a new car, saving for a house, watching a child grow, with someone. A glass of fine wine, a moment in time holding hands, with someone.(RJ) Jacob we will miss you.

Dear Mrs. Grabe
I am sorry about the loss you have so suddenly encountered. Please remember that my family and I will be praying for you. Remember, Jacob is in Heaven now, looking down on us now, so rejoice in that fact. I knew Jacob a little better than some and this was the hardest thing that has happend in my life, and I know it was worse for you. All the people in band also pray for you in this time of hardship. Let God be your guide to make it through, and to be your strength for now and the future. God Bless,
Quintin B.

Mrs Grabe
I can not put it in words of how much i miss Jacob because i have known him since first grade and i talked to him alot and every day he would have the biggest smile when he got to school and just yesterday we played outside together and he is really good at basketball. It just makes me mad and it got me thinking of how any human in their right mind can kill anyone for no reason im very sorry for your loss. I want you to be comforted by everyone because Jacob was a very smart kid i mean yesterday we had a really hard math problem and he was the only one that could solve it. Again I am very sorry for your loss and I wish that we will remember next year on this tradjic death of your son.
Love,
Tyler B.
Ps he will be missed by all friends and I will miss him the most because i have known them the longest and Ginny C. We wil miss him again I am very very sorry for your loss and then today he is gone

its sooo sad how it took a gunshot and one last breath from jacob for people to realize how amazing this little boy was!
he really was a good influence and an good friend. i can only imagine having to lose one of my children. though i am only 14 jacob was only a year younger and knowing him for a year, i didnt really talk to him that much but what i did was a great experience. He was frowned upon by the 'jocks' for he was little but, its not the size that matters deep down i know he was just a lil goofball like all the rest of us. I miss him!
I MISS HIM SOO MUCH
FOREVER IN MY THOUGHTS
Over these years i have lost many close friends but none have had this big of an impact not only on my school but on the town of grand junction.
R.I.P. JACOB GRABE!
G.M.M.S AND C.H.S Freshman and lower grades of grand mesa will always remember you.
I LOVE YOU!
YOU WERE TOO YOUNG!
