None of the 27 students riding in a school bus Tuesday morning when it collided with another vehicle appeared to be injured or traumatized, according to Fruitvale Elementary School administrators.
The students were checked out and released by emergency personnel about 8:30 a.m., after the driver of a Toyota sedan traveling in the wrong lane on 32 Road near E Road was hit broadside by the bus.
Students suffered or complained of only minor injuries, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
“If for any reason you feel that your child needs to be examined by your family doctor due to this accident, please do not hesitate to seek medical attention,” Fruitvale Principal Kathy Hays said in a letter sent home with students Tuesday afternoon.
After students were released by medical personnel, bus operator First Student dispatched another bus to pick up the students and take them to school. Once there, parents of every student involved in the crash were called, and teachers met with each of the involved students to discuss the accident, Hays said.
The bus, driven by Jennifer Blasdell, 36, was moderately damaged, but was driven away.
The driver of the sedan, Viridiana Ybarra-Rason, 24, of Clifton, was cited for careless driving and driving without a valid driver’s license, the State Patrol said. Her vehicle was totaled, but two children riding in the vehicle were uninjured, the State Patrol said.
Blasdell had just picked up students and was pulling away from the stop when it collided with the car, said Marvin Shipley, manager of the First Student bus fleet for District 51.
“We’re not sure if it was the last stop,” he said, “but it was getting to the end of the route.”
First Student will be collecting any medical bills from the students involved and will turn them over to Ybarra-Rason’s insurance provider.
